This is a true story about Nepal and focused on the governments of Australia / Canada / UK and the USA. I really hope that journalists in these countries pick it up and please contact me for more information if needed..
Nepal is attracting a lot of tourists per year who come for the mountains but also for all the other things to do, like Rafting, Paragliding and the mentioned visits of the nature parks. Not to forget that Nepal is known for the spiritual background and although the main religion is Hinduism, Buddha was born in Nepal.
Did you know that more than half of the Vultures in the Himalayas has declined in the last decade by over 99%? That from every 100 Vultures there is only 1 left. I didn’t know either. And do you know the reason? It is caused by a medicine called Diclofenac, very useful for humans but very deadly to Vultures. A lot of Animals get this medicine as well and if they die, that Diclofenac is eaten by Vultures and they die from it… No, I did not know either.
I have rented a house because after almost 8 years living from a suitcase half of the year, I was looking for a more ‘home’ feeling. And that worked out quite nice, a nice house, normal food instead of hotel food and pizza’s and a relaxed environment. Everything looked perfect but that is the moment you should start worrying…
Normally I am working between Christmas and New year as it is a quite period where you can really finish up some stuff. This year was no exception but it was completely different.
I am working already for 8 years in Nepal. I work for a Dutch software company and in that role I visit Nepal more at least a few times per year. And a few times per means around 5 trips in average from 2 ot 3 weeks. So if you calculate that i have been at least 8 years * 5 times * 2 weeks = 80 weeks (minimum) in Nepal.
But the world changed. Suddenly people did not want to go to the next field but skip some fields. They invented a mouse for it, you could jump to any field you want. And you could switch between programs, suddenly working on one machine was not good anymore, everybody had their own desktop computer with all problems which comes with it. But those programs were still the same.
As I try to stay on top of things happening in in the software field, I decided to upgrade to windows8 when it arrived. I was interested to see what has been done with the Metro interface and the new approach of Microsoft now they have for the first time in decades serious competitors on the desktop / laptop / tablet market.
In the years after that I did (also with help of others) a lot of very successful projects with Daan. When I left my first company to start Javra, it was again Daan who came to me with new work. And I think that we as Javra, combined with Daans own IT department, did great work in delivering state of the art software, projects within budget and so on.
